Abstract
The purpose of the study is to examine the effect of emotional dysregulation and depression on female adolescents¡¯ eating attitude, and the mediating effect of depression on the relationship between emotional dysregulation and eating attitude. This study targeted 1,144 female adolescents attending 4 high schools in the capital area. For data analysis, mean, standard deviation, frequency analysis, one-way ANOVA, Pearson¡¯s correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and stepwise multiple regression analysis were conducted using SPSS Win 21. The main findings of the study are as follows: First, there were significant differences in eating attitude among the BMI groups of female adolescents. The overweight group showed the biggest differences in eating attitude and sub-factors and it was followed by the normal weight group and the underweight group. Second, depression was the variable, which best described female adolescents¡¯ desire for slimness in all the BMI groups. Depression best described body dissatisfaction in the normal weight group and overweight group, whereas it was a lack of emotional awareness in the underweight group. In the underweight group, limited access to emotion regulation strategies best described excessive eating, but in the normal group and the overweight group, it was depression and impulse control difficulties respectively. Third, depression had a full mediating effect on the relationship between emotional dysregulation and desire for slimness in all the BMI groups. Also, depression had a full mediating effect on the relationship between emotional dysregulation and body dissatisfaction in the normal weight group and the overweight group. On the other hand, depression had a partial mediating effect on the relationship between emotional dysregulation and excessive eating in the normal weight group.
